I have been painting on the majority of the same boards over the past 10+ years. Some perhaps 5 years, some 20 years worth of addition and subtraction. They are painted over, sanded off, added to, painted over again, and often made a white surface anew. I have been using the image transfer process since 2002, but mostly matte medium transfer has been my transfer process. I conjure the images in Photoshop, sometimes with minimal touches, based on photos I've taken.

Recently work involves using the transfer process to apply grids to prepared boards, or as a veil over improvised abstract doodles. I see these mostly as meditations, and therapeutic exercises. They are also a vehicle for re-engaging the art community, as I have been applying to juired exhibitions and calls-for-entry.

These next three were created specifically for the Annual Ohio Art League Thumb Box Show 6"x 6" December 2024. First and only time I created a spreadsheet to document my work and time!

The genesis of this 10-part series wasn't some grand artistic vision, just a simple desire to spruce up my bathroom. I envisioned three or four pieces, nothing complex, just basic patterns and vibrant hues to enliven the space. Layer upon layer of paint was applied, then sanded smooth, a ritual of creation.

Leftover paint, a testament to my initial misjudgment, spurred the series' expansion. Discarded pieces became canvases for impromptu doodles, experiments in color and form. The dissatisfaction with those first four pieces led to a breakthrough—the imposition of grids, a framework for controlled chaos.

Color was introduced, not with calculated precision, but with an aleatory spirit, a dance of chance. A select palette, each color applied to each piece in a rhythmic cycle, a measured progression towards a desired density. (I used AI, using the prompt 'rewrite in the manner of K. Michael Hayes.)
